 Last week I met a friend who, after I told him we offer the service of translations from English to Spanish, asked me why should somebody use that service if there is something available like Google Translate (http://translate.google.com/). I explained to him the clear difference between the quality of machine translation (what Google Translate does) and professional translation, but that is not the topic of this post.The fact is that Google Translate is also a very good tool for translation. Certainly, it cannot substitute a professional translator in his work, but can help him a lot. It is not a common dictionary that simply searches for words in a database matching to the input given. Its technology (as far as I have read about it) is quite outstanding: using Google's powerful algorithms it searches for other uses of the same word in other web-sites or documents and matches the best possible equivalent. Thus, for a translator working on any given document, it could help for cases such as when you need to know, not so much the specific translation of a word or phrase, but how it is being used by others on the Net, i.e. in other web-sites and documents published on the Web.
